Is my personal data — messages, M-Pesa balance — ever sent to ShieldStep's servers?
Absolutely not. ShieldStep is built on a 100% privacy-first architecture. All detection, scanning, and interception happens entirely on your device. We never read your SMS messages, never access your M-Pesa balance or transaction history, and never transmit any personal financial data to our servers. The only data we use is anonymized app usage metrics to maintain our blocklist.
Can I uninstall ShieldStep whenever I want?
This is by design. ShieldStep uses Android Device Administrator permissions to intentionally make removal difficult — because that friction is the product. When an urge spikes, the last thing your future self wants is for past-you to have made it easy to disable your own protection. To remove the app, you must first manually revoke Device Administrator status through your phone's Settings, which creates a deliberate, sober decision-making step. This is not a bug; it's the core of how we keep you protected.
Will ShieldStep block my normal M-Pesa payments to family and businesses?
No. ShieldStep only intercepts payment requests specifically directed at registered gambling operators — sportsbooks, betting paybills, casino deposit codes, and lottery short codes. All other M-Pesa functionality remains completely unaffected. You can send money to family, pay bills, buy airtime, and use Till numbers for shopping without any interference. Our smart detection is highly targeted, not a blanket M-Pesa block.
How does the subscription payment work? Is it automatic?
Subscriptions are activated via a straightforward M-Pesa STK push or Paybill payment directly within the ShieldStep app. There are no automatic deductions — each renewal is a conscious, manual choice you make. When your subscription period ends, the shield deactivates and you'll receive a notification to renew if you choose to continue your protection.
